Your new role

As a regulatory lawyer you will take on this newly created role that presents an excellent opportunity to develop and make it your own. You will be responsible for supporting our Operations, Major Projects, Regulatory Compliance and Governance Division and SES teams, and to provide the business with legal advice and support on health and safety and other regulatory legal matters as required. You will undertake a gatekeeper role, responsible for the oversight of health and safety and other regulatory matters, acting as an interface between General Counsel, external lawyers and internal Directorates. You will work closely with the Operations, Major Projects, Motorway Development Division and SES as required.

What you’ll be leading on

  • Provide robust advice on the relevant regulatory legislation with an initial focus on health and safety matters including advising on all aspects of liability, procedure, the collation and assessment of evidence
  • Provide advice on the operational and reputational risk to the business
  • Provide training and regular legal updates to our non-legal colleagues
  • Investigate claims and complaints made by third parties

To be successful

  • Experience of working in an in-house and/or public-sector environment
  • Experience of regulatory enforcement, litigation and court procedure
  • Knowledge and understanding of Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 and associated legislation, procedures and policies would be an advantage
  • Attention to detail and the ability to work at pace
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to build relationships with stakeholders.
  • Qualified to practise as a Solicitor or Barrister or Chartered Legal Executive in England and Wales, with a strong academic background

A bit about us

The General Counsels Directorate encompasses the company’s legal team and the Company Secretariat function. They provide an effective legal service to the company, and support the Board, Chief Executive and its committees on a wide range of issues. The team provide strategic legal advice on commercial, planning, operational and legislative matters, supporting the Road Investment Strategy and ensuring legal compliance and limiting risk exposure.

National Highways Regulatory Compliance and Governance Team provide legal advice in Health & Safety Law, Regulatory Law and Coronial Law.
