Senior Engineer – Thames Tideway Tunnel

Role and Responsibilities


1.0 Project Summary

Thames Tideway Tunnel – Main Works East is a £604m project secured by the Costain-Vinci-Bachy joint venture (“CVB”) to provide a new sewage storage and transfer tunnel from Chambers Wharf to Abbey Mills. It includes the main tunnel, a connection tunnel to Greenwich Pumping Station, various shaft constructions, a connection to the newly constructed Lee Tunnel project, and minor works at the Beckton Sewage Treatment Plant, all as part of an overall project to reduce sewer discharge overflows into the River Thames. The works are scheduled to commence on site in July 2016 and complete in March 2024.



2.0 Job Role & Purpose

As the Senior Engineer you will be responsible to your Site Agent for the execution of your individual responsibilities.

You shall

• Provide professional support to the project team and the staff under your control

• Maintain a good working relationship with client, third party and associated personnel

• Be conversant with works information documents, programmes, specifications, and related information for these works manage and control your section of the work according to agreed programmes

• Ensure that appropriate cover is provided during your absences from work.

• You are to handover your duties to a delegate colleague to be agreed with your line Manager.

4.0 Health, Safety & Environment

• You are responsible for implementing and maintaining safe systems of work in accordance with Site Health, Safety and Environmental management policies, systems and procedures. This will include the participation in any regular assessment of new risks and hazards that may not be specifically covered by safety system documentation already in place.

• Implement the relevant requirements of the Safety Management System (SMS) within your area of responsibility and act upon the findings of site safety audits and inspections.

• Implement the relevant requirements of the Site Health, Safety and Environmental management policies, systems and procedures in relation to Sub Contractors.

• Ensure methods are prepared and carried out using the current best practices and incorporating safe systems of work providing the optimum working environment.

• Ensure that staff, under your control are aware of, receive or have access to copies of the Environmental Policy and are kept informed of environmental developments and issues.

5.0 System Management

• You are responsible for carrying out duties in line with the Contract Execution Plan (CEP) for your areas of responsibility. This shall include the generation of System Records that show compliance with the CEP. This may include auditing and surveillance input and actions.

• Your attention is drawn to the Policy and Objectives Statements for CVB used on this project. Copies are included in the Contract Execution Plan. Be aware of their content. These Policy Statements can be viewed on the various Notice Boards displayed around the office.

6.0 Delegated Authority


Your delegated authority level(s) will be consistent with that detailed in the current revision of the CVB Project Authority signature list – “DELAPS”.

7.0 Principal Duties & Accountabilities

You will be assigned Package Manager for an Area of Works. Your specific duties and responsibilities are listed below.

• Ensure the construction of the works are delivered in accordance with the JV policy and procedures.

• Ensure that designs and permits are in place prior to the commencement of works in line with procedures.

• Manage the permanent and temporary works designs to plan the works and develop systems of work to ensure efficient safe execution of the works.

• Develop and drive continuous improvement. Drive the implementation of digital technology and utilise this to increase productivity and efficiency of the works.

• Manage the quality control process from planning to handover.

• Manage the 12 month look ahead programme and ensure the team manage the 3 weekly, and 2 month lookahead programmes.

• Monitor progress and present information in a timely manner to allow accurate reporting in line with project expectations.

• Manage the procurement of plant, materials, and subcontractors in accordance with budget.

• Participate in maintaining the reporting requirements of the project both internally and ensuring correct distribution of information.

• Ensure that all operations are properly planned, and that detailed method statements and risk assessments are in place for all activities prior to their commencement and ensure the continued review and compliance with these methods.

• Provide guidance, encouragement, and support within the CVB team, and develop the skills and competencies of the staff under your line management and ensure successful succession planning.

• Work with teams for other sections of work on the site to allow efficient outcomes for the good of the project.

• Co-ordinate day to day logistics on site and co-ordinate with traffic and logistics teams to ensure compliance.

• Manage environmental risks and contribute where necessary to documents required to obtain consents and liase with consents team to ensure timely approval of consents.

• Degree or equivalent level qualification in a construction management subject

• SMSTS card

• CSCS Card

• Working towards membership of a professional body.
