By joining our Highway Maintenance Apprentice Programme, you will embark on an exciting journey that provides the perfect opportunity for you to kick start your career.

Our 24-month apprenticeship programme combines studying for your Highways Maintenance Skilled Operative Level 2 apprenticeship, alongside working with our experienced and qualified team of Highways professionals. Whether you are meeting with the client to understand expectations or being onsite and operational, you’ll help us in delivering a full range of services on our key Highways contracts with Kent County Council from one of our five operational depots (Sandwich, Ashford, Faversham, Haysden, and Aylesford).

Your qualification will be delivered by our training provider CP Assessments at their centre in Doncaster. Attendance is via six, five-day training blocks, but don’t worry your accommodation and travel costs are covered by us.

You will learn the skills and trades necessary for highway maintenance through a combination of formal training and practical experience, including all aspects of highway maintenance works from winter maintenance activities, minor civil’s works through to installing traffic management. Taking responsibility for the safety of yourself to ensure compliance with relevant health and safety legislation and safe operation to protect members of the public.

Specific duties are likely to include:

  • Attend project and work briefings as required.
  • All aspects of highway maintenance on the strategic road network works including: Routine and cyclic maintenance activitiesDrainage worksCarriageway patchingWinter maintenance operations.Drive our Amey Fleet vehicles
  • Emergencies call out operations.
  • Taking responsibility for the safety of yourself to ensure compliance with relevant health and safety legislation and safe operation to protect member of the public.
  • Allocation and capturing time and resource utilisation in line with operated allocation system.
  • To keep records, complete all necessary paperwork, communicate, and liaise with other employees of Amey, sub-contractors, the emergency services, the police, the public, clients, and customers
  • What will you bring?

    One of the best things about an Apprenticeship with us is that you don’t need to have previous experience in working on our busy highways. However, we do hope that you’ll share our interest in Highways Maintenance. As this is an operational role, we are looking for people who love getting hands on and stuck in!

    You should be comfortable working outside come wind, rain, or shine! As you will be working on the Highways it is essential that you’re also keen to develop a good understanding of Health & Safety and can be confident in that environment. We therefore keep our list of essential requirements to a minimum, but there are a few things needed to qualify for our programme:

    Minimum qualifications required:

  • 2 GCSE A*-D/9-3 (or equivalent) grades. Must include Maths and English
  • Available to join our programme in April 2021
  • Passion for developing your skills both professional and personally
  • A commitment to complete your two-year apprenticeship whilst working
  • A full, clean UK Driving licence would be desirable
